The End of Rotax?

There is no doubt that Rotax is the dominant force in karting across the world. That's not bad for an engine thats supposed to be in a snow-mobile and not on a kart. But is it's time as the number 1 kart engine going to come to an end?

There are many 125cc long life kart engines on the market ranging from the Parilla 125cc Leopard, PRD 125cc Fireball ,VORTEX 125cc ROK etc... but do any of these pose a threat to the Rotax 'monopoly'?

Well, yes, to the monopoly anyway! It is no secret that the Rotax is a high maintanance engine, and as it is sealed, checking for internal problems can be a nuisance. The carb is difficult to set up and weather stations seem to be a necesity.

There are now many alternative motors on the market for you to choose from that rival the Rotax FR125 MAX. Lets look at two motors that could cause the Rotax FR125 MAX some trouble in the near future:

1. Parilla Leopard - A popular engine in France, and America. Engine life of up to 20+. Uses CIK 360 Tillotson. And retails at about £1200. Not sealed. Rebuild cost £200-400

2. PRD Fireball - Built in Taiwan. Engine life similar to Leopard. Uses CIK 360 Tillotson. And retails at £850. Not sealed. Rebuild cost £200-400

Both these engines offer performance that is the equivalent, if not better than the Rotax FR125 Max.

Also, these 'new' batch of engines are specifically designed for karts, unlike the Rotax FR125 Max. This results in them having a power band more related to the 100cc engines. The Rotax FR125 MAX is notorious for having a power band that is slow-fast-slow. They also offer the same ideal of near FA performance, but with lower cost and higher engine life. Also, the carbs that these engines use are better designed for karting and offer the oppurtunity for outside tuning while driving.

Across the world there are many classes. To accomidate all these engines a TaG (Touch and Go) class was introduced. Go to www.tagracing.net for more information, or check the UK 'TaG' equivilent at www.clubmankarting.co.uk. This class allows you to use any 125cc Touch and Go engine. And any engine performance differences are levelled by weight restrictions.

So why isn't there a TaG class in the UK? Why can we only race Rotax and not the other engines?

Unfortunatley the UK is one of the only countries that doesn't incorporate the TaG ideal. I will tackle this issue in a later article.

But is the dominance of Rotax coming to an end? Well, with the infux of cheaper and improved high performance long life engines, it is only time until the dominace of the Rotax FR125 MAX weakens.

Having raced the Rotax Max since september 2004, I have had the big end go at 20hours in october at 14200 rpm costing a grand total of £555.55 to repair with only the crank case saved! (yes the internals where in 1000'S of pieces, all down the exhaust and such)
That engine was rebuilt, and after about 3 clutch shoes later, it finally decided it would lose power and not run properly at the end of april the day before a race meeting. So engine number 2 came out the woodwork with only 2.5-3.0 hours on it. Motor number 2 was bolted on the night before the race, and was running fantastic in the meeting. really was a vast improvment from engine number 1. Just sort of shows the inconsistances in speed of these engines.
Anyway 2 weekends after the race meeting we done some practising on the engine. LUCKY WE DID. as the engine decided to let go right at the end of the test day. AND GUESS WHAT. yep the big end had gone again. luckyly it didnt do as much damage as it went under braking. but it was still 350 pounds worth. 3 hours old....and the big end went. couldnt believe it!! er actually yes we could.
So now i had 2 rotax max engines out of action!
Next race meeting we ran engine number 2 in on the saturday and guess what. THE STARTER motor went. great so more time spent repairing poor quality.

Engine number 1 went off the the engine rebuilders who were puzzled why it didnt run right. so that engine is still out of action.

You maybe thinking we dont look after our max enough. but we actually run 25% more oil in the mix than JAG (rotax) say you should!
These engines are NOT race engines, at all and the sooner TAG comes along the better!! I will definatley have my engines up for safe and get myself a REAL engine with QUALITY COMPONENTS.
I could go on more and more, but i wish i was young enough to do JICA!!!

Hi, Sue here Race Administrator to Trackside Racing www,tracksideracing.co.uk

Watch this space. We are an established MSA Kart Club who run endurance senior max race series. It is on the cards that we will include the 125 tag engine class to our racing. Further details will be released this summer. In the meantime I will now be in regular contact with Alan Dove about this, or you may contact me direct at Trackside Racing on 01795 473 300 - or email: Sue@tracksidekarting.co.uk

Hi Alan, OK have sent you an email tonight updating you on TaG engines within our endurance race series. Stiddard TR have proposed a 2nd class on race days, which will be a TaG 125 2/ class - open gearing. We will always run a Senior Rotax Max dedicated class with fixed gearing, this is how Trackside started, and I for one want to respect what 80% of the Challenge series kart racing drivers still want.

However that aside, you know and understand all too well the the market place is calling for somewhere for TaG engines to race. WELL THEY NOW CAN. I look forward to where this concept may take endurance karting over the next few years.

From another point of view, Rotax is by no means dead and gone. It remains a very popular engine with us and one that many drivers want to continue racing at endurance level in 2006.

Hopefully 2006 will also see other credible TaG 125 2/ engines producing some good results.

Anyway each racing team will have their own opinion and preferred engine choice which must be equally respected.

No doubt, more soon.
Regards
Sue

In Canada as well the Rotax is unfortunately dominating. It seems as though the Leopard and Fireball etc. have lower rebuild costs, easier tuning, and a better powerband. Now can someone tell me why everyone still wants a Rotax?
For example, someone can pick up a Fireball complete kit for approx. $1800 dollars as opposed to around $4000 dollars for a new Rotax around here. $2200 dollars means a lot more to people who have to work their asses off for it.
